What is Meranti Wood?

Meranti is not actually a single tree species. It is a collective trade name for a large family of tropical hardwoods (the Shorea genus) native to Southeast Asia.
Think of it as a budget-friendly cousin to true Mahogany. It shares a similar warm, reddish-brown aesthetic and a straight, even grain, but it comes at a fraction of the cost. Because it balances a premium look with an affordable price tag, it has become a go-to staple for South African builders and DIY enthusiasts alike.
