Wooden Pool Decking Cape Town

Wooden pool decking coordinated across Cape Town, from Hout Bay and the Atlantic Seaboard to the Southern Suburbs, Northern Suburbs and Helderberg.

Work out an estimate on wooden decking price per m2 with our decking calculator. Popular pool decking timbers are treated pine, balau, garapa and massaranduba.

Custom Wooden Pool Decking Built for Cape Town Conditions

Cape Decking coordinates wooden pool deck installations across Cape Town, from Hout Bay and the Atlantic Seaboard through to the Southern Suburbs, Northern Suburbs and Helderberg. We specify the job, match it to vetted installation teams, and manage it through to handover.

Most pool decks we coordinate land between R1,700 and R2,500 per square metre installed, depending on timber and substructure. A straightforward pine deck on an existing concrete surround sits at the lower end. A raised massaranduba or composite deck with level changes and new footings sits at the upper end.

Every job is measured on site before a price is given. There are no kit prices here, because no two pool surrounds are the same.

We also supply wooden and automated pool covers and sliding deck pool covers if you want the deck to do more than one job.

What Determines Wooden Pool Decking Prices in Cape Town?

The figures below are installed prices per square metre, covering substructure, boards, fixings and sealing. They assume a reasonably level existing surface and normal site access.

Timber Installed Price per m² Expected Life in Cape Town Best Suited To
Pine (CCA Treated) From R1,700 8–12 years with maintenance Budget-conscious projects and sheltered sites
Balau From R2,250 20–25 years The default choice; handles strong Cape Town sun and the southeaster well
Garapa From R2,300 20–25 years Lighter colour, greys evenly and offers good stability around fixings
Massaranduba From R2,400 25+ years Very hard and dense timber suited to premium decking installations
Composite From R2,500 25+ years Low-maintenance decking with no sealing required, consistent colour and a splinter-free surface

What Moves a Pool Decking Quote Up or Down

Substructure. If your existing pool surround is sound concrete, the deck can often be fixed directly to it. If the deck needs to be raised, levelled or built over soil, footings and framing add materially to the cost.

Level changes. A single flat plane is the cheapest deck to build. Steps, split levels and curved edges add labour.

Coping and edge detail. A simple square edge costs less than a mitred or bullnose return around a pool coping.

Access. If every board has to be carried through the house or down a flight of stairs, that shows up in the quote.

Timber grade. Within balau or garapa there are grade differences. We specify and price on a consistent grade so quotes are comparable.

Choosing a Pool Deck Installer: What to Check

A pool deck fails from underneath. Water, salt and sun work on the substructure and the fixings long before the boards look tired. Most of the decks we are asked to replace were built correctly on the surface and incorrectly below it.

Here is what to interrogate in any quote you receive, ours included.

Is the substructure in the price? This is the single most common gap between two quotes that look similar. Ask whether the figure covers framing, joists and fixing to the slab, or only the deck boards and labour. A quote that excludes substructure will always look cheaper.

What joist spacing is specified? Around a pool, boards get wet, dry, and bear weight from people standing in one spot. Wider spacing saves timber and produces a deck that flexes within two summers. Ask for the spacing in millimetres and compare it between quotes.

What fixings are being used? Within about three kilometres of the sea, coated screws corrode. Stainless is not optional on the Atlantic Seaboard, in Hout Bay, or anywhere the southeaster carries salt inland. Ask specifically for 304 or 316 stainless and get it written into the quote.

How is the deck ventilated underneath? A pool deck laid tight to a slab with no air gap traps moisture and rots from below. There should be a clear ventilation detail in the specification.

What gap is left between boards? Too tight and the deck swells and buckles. Too wide and you lose things down it. Around a pool it also affects drainage.

Is sealing included, and what happens at six months? Hardwood needs sealing on installation and again within the first year. Ask whether the first maintenance visit is included or billed separately.

What does the guarantee actually cover? Workmanship and materials are different things. Ask for the term on each, in writing, and ask what voids it.

Three Questions Worth Asking Any Installer Before You Sign

  • Can you show me a deck you built around a pool five or more years ago?
  • What is your joist spacing, and why that spacing?
  • What happens if a board cups or splits in the first year?

Timber Options for Pool Decks

Pool decking asks more of timber than ordinary decking does. The boards are wet and dry repeatedly, they take barefoot traffic, and in Cape Town they take full sun and salt air at the same time.

  • Balau is the default around Cape Town pools and for good reason. It is dense enough to shrug off both the summer sun and the salt the southeaster carries. It checks and greys as it weathers, which is normal rather than a fault.

  • Garapa is lighter in colour and greys more evenly. It is more stable than balau at the fixing points, which matters on a pool deck where boards are screwed down tight.

  • Pine is the affordable option and is perfectly serviceable if correctly treated and sealed on schedule. Expect to maintain it more often.

  • Composite removes sealing from the equation entirely and stays splinter free underfoot, which is worth considering if children use the pool.

How a Pool Deck Installation Works

Site visit and measure. We come out, measure the surround, check the existing surface and discuss what you want the space to do. No charge.

Specification and quote. You get a written quote that states the timber, the substructure, the fixings and the finish, so you can compare it line by line against anything else you have been given.

Substructure. Framing goes down first, levelled and ventilated. On most jobs this is the bulk of the work and the part you will never see again.

Boards and fixing. Laid, spaced and fixed with stainless screws.

Seal and handover. Optional by choice. The deck is sealed, cleaned down and walked through with you.

Most pool decks under 50 square metres take three to five working days on site once materials are delivered. Larger decks, raised structures and jobs needing new footings take longer. Duration is subject to weather, material availability, weekends, public holidays and other factors.

What Does Decking Cost Per m² in Cape Town?

Factors That Determine The Costs Of A Deck

  • Choosing the cheapest quote rarely delivers the results you expect.
  • Professional installers provide the right materials, machinery, transport, and experienced labour.
  • These combined skills come at a premium. If you are paying far less, something is missing, and the end product will suffer.
  • Quality workmanship costs more, but it protects your investment and ensures a durable finish.

Labour

One of the main costs is skilled artisans who know how to install a deck correctly.

Materials

Choosing the right materials determines the longevity of your end product.

Equipment

Circular saws, drills and sanding machinery produce a clean, professional result. Measuring tools, fastening tools and post-hole digging equipment create a solid foundation and substructure.

Pool Decking Questions We Are Asked Most

Which timber is best right at the water’s edge?
Balau or garapa. Both handle constant wetting and drying. Pine will do it if sealed properly and maintained on schedule, but it will not last as long in that position.

Is a wooden pool deck slippery when wet?
Less than smooth tile. Hardwood has natural grip and the gaps between boards shed water. If grip is a particular concern, a grooved board profile or a non-slip sealer helps.

How close to the water line can the deck go?
Right up to the coping if the detail is right. What matters is that the substructure is ventilated and the edge boards are fixed so they cannot lift.

How wide should the gaps between boards be?
Typically 4mm to 6mm, depending on timber and moisture content on the day. Wide enough to drain and allow movement, tight enough not to lose things down.

How often does a pool deck need sealing?
Once on installation, again within the first year, then annually in Cape Town. Decks in full afternoon sun on the Atlantic side may want attention more often.

Can a deck be built over an existing concrete pool surround?
Usually yes, and it is the most cost-effective way to do it. The substructure fixes to the slab and the old surface disappears underneath.

Do I need council approval for a pool deck?
A ground-level deck normally does not. A raised deck, or one attached to the house, may. We will tell you at the site visit if it is likely to apply.

A treated pine deck lasts 15 to 20 years with regular maintenance (resealing every 2 to 3 years). Hardwood decks – Balau, Garapa, and Massaranduba – last 25 to 30 years with periodic oiling. Cape Town’s coastal climate demands quality timber and proper treatment to maximise lifespan. The substructure quality and installation workmanship are equally important. A well-built hardwood deck can outlast the home it’s attached to.

The best wood depends on your budget and priorities. For affordability, treated pine offers excellent value at R1,700 to R2,200 per m² installed. For durability and low maintenance, Balau and Garapa are the top choices in Cape Town – both resist moisture, insects, and weathering exceptionally well. Garapa offers a golden tone while Balau provides a richer reddish-brown colour. Read more about decking wood prices in South Africa and explore our wooden decking options.

Not necessarily. Entry-level composite decking starts around R1,800 per m² – similar to treated pine. Premium composite ranges up to R4,500 per m². The advantage of composite is near-zero maintenance, which can make it cheaper over 15 to 20 years. However, timber offers natural warmth, can be refinished, and often costs less upfront. Compare both options with our composite decking range or get a quote for both materials.

Timber decking prices in Cape Town range from R1,700 to now R4,000 per m² fully installed in 2026.

Treated pine sits at the lower end (R1,700 – R2,200 per m²), while premium hardwoods like Balau and Garapa range from R2,800 to R4,000 per m². These prices include materials, substructure, and labour. Extras like balustrades, stairs, and sealing are additional.

Prices fluctuate subject to fuel prices, supplier pricing and changes to local VAT & Tax laws but that is the estimate for 2026!
