A pergola is a freestanding or attached timber structure – posts carrying a grid of beams and rafters – that extends your usable outdoor space and gives you shade where you need it.
We build them open, slatted, or fully roofed. Most of our work is in balau, garapa or treated pine, with the timber chosen for where the structure sits: a pergola 200 metres from the sea in Hout Bay takes different fixings and a different finish to one in a sheltered Southern Suburbs garden.
Every pergola we build is measured and quoted on site. There are no standard kits.

Pergola Roofing Options
Whether your pergola needs a roof depends on what you want from it. Open slats give you dappled shade and keep the structure light. A solid roof turns it into a space you can use in winter. We will tell you on the site visit which of these actually suits your aspect and exposure. A clear roof over a north-facing patio can make the space unusable in summer.

Wooden Pergola With Polycarbonate Roof Sheeting
Polycarbonate sheeting – lets light through while keeping rain off. Available in clear, opal and bronze. The bronze cuts more heat, which matters on a west-facing patio in February.
Wooden Pergola With Clear Perspex Roof Sheeting
Perspex – up to 92% light transmission, so it reads almost like a skylight. The clearest option, and the one most people choose over a braai area.
Wooden Pergola With Shadecloth
Shade cloth – the lowest-cost covering. Good for a quick fix, but it does not last as long as the alternatives in Cape Town wind.

Which Timber for a Wooden Pergola
Pergola timber has a different job to decking timber. Decking takes foot traffic and standing water; a pergola takes wind load and sun. That changes which species make sense.
Balau – the default for pergola posts and beams in Cape Town. Dense, strong across a span, and holds up to the southeaster. It will check and move a little as it weathers, which is normal in a structural member and not a fault.
Garapa – a lighter honey colour that greys evenly rather than patchily. More stable than balau and less inclined to split at the fixings, which matters on exposed rafter ends. Costs more.
Pine (SA pine, CCA treated) – the affordable option, and perfectly sound for a full pergola if it is correctly treated and maintained. We use it for substructures and for complete pergolas where budget is the deciding factor. Expect to re-seal it more often than hardwood.
Meranti – used for slatted infill and trim where appearance matters more than structural load.
We source everything ourselves and we will tell you honestly when the cheaper timber is the right call. It often is.
What a Wooden Pergola Costs in Cape Town
Pergola pricing comes down to size, span, timber and roof. A small attached pine pergola over a doorway is a different job to a 6 x 4 metre freestanding balau structure with a polycarbonate roof and foundations.
The things that move the price most:
Span – the distance the beams have to cross without support. Wider spans need heavier sections, which costs more than adding a post.
Timber – pine is the most affordable, garapa the most expensive, balau in between.
Roofing – open slat is cheapest, IBR and perspex add materially to the cost.
Foundations – bolting to an existing slab is straightforward. Digging and casting footings in a garden is not.
Access – if materials have to be carried through the house, that shows up in the quote.
